About Proactiv Acne Product

Overview

Proactiv is a popular acne treatment system. It was created by two dermatologists, Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields. It’s a three-step system that must be used daily for best results. Though the Proactive acne products do not cure acne, they have shown to be effective in reducing acne lesions.

Products

The Proactiv three-step system consists of three different products: the renewing cleanser, revitalizing toner and repairing treatment. These products must be used in order to achieve optimal results. The cleanser contains benzoyl peroxide, a powerful acne-fighting medicine that eliminates acne-causing bacteria. The toner unclogs pores to reduce blackheads and whiteheads. The repairing treatment also contains benzoyl peroxide, and is used last in the system.

How It Works

According to Drs. Rodan and Fields, Proactiv is designed to treat existing acne and prevent new lesions from forming. The medications in the Proactiv acne products are the correct concentration to target “the acne cycle,” and stop blemishes before they form. The active ingredient in the Proactiv products, benzoyl peroxide, works by reducing the population of P. acnes bacteria on the skin, thereby healing lesions and preventing new ones

How To Use

Drs. Rodan and Fields recommend using the Proactive acne products two times a day, in the morning and at night, and following instructions carefully for best results. The renewing cleanser is used first, and applied all over the skin. A dime-sized amount is massaged onto the skin for about 1 to 2 minutes then rinsed off. The revitalizing toner is used second, and also applied to the entire face with a cotton pad. The repairing treatment is used last, and is applied only to the problem areas, like active lesions. It is allowed to dry on the skin, and is not rinsed off.

What To Expect

When you first start using Proactiv, you may experience some slight itching and burning sensations, which are normal. You should start seeing overall improvements in your complexion within two weeks, but for some people it may take longer before their skin is cleared to their satisfaction. Keep in mind that Proactiv will not cure your acne, and if you stop using the system, blemishes and breakouts may return. Treating acne is a continuous process.

Warning

Talk to your doctor or dermatologist before using Proactive, and always make sure to follow usage instructions carefully to guarantee best results.

Common side effects attributed to use of Proactive acne products, include: itching and burning sensations, peeling, dryness of the skin, redness and skin irritation.

Adverse side effects such as blistering, crusting, color changes in skin tone, extreme redness or irritation and swelling might indicate an allergic reaction to benzoyl peroxide. If you experience any of these adverse reactions, discontinue use of the Proactive products, and contact your dermatologist.

Benzoyl peroxide is a bleaching agent that may lighten hair and clothes, so you should try to avoid contact between them.
