I spend most of my job staring at either the computer or TV screen and I’ve got to say, what I’m about to share is one of the most inspired little pieces of video I’ve seen in a while. Click on www.kitchengardeners.org/ and scroll down to the August 22, 2006 “Our beautiful food world” entry and click on the arrow on the screen shot to launch the video. What follows is a nearly 3-minute “food for thought” photo montage and messages set to Coldplay’s “Beautiful World” track.
The group responsible for producing such a compelling piece is Kitchen Gardeners International, a Maine nonprofit whose mission is to “empower individuals, families, and communities to achieve greater levels of food and self-reliance through the promotion of kitchen gardening, home-cooking, and sustainable local food systems. In doing so, KGI seeks to connect, serve, and expand the global community of people who grow some of their own.” KGI was planted by a diverse group of kitchen gardeners and now includes more than 2,500 kitchen gardeners from over 50 countries.
They celebrated Kitchen Garden Day yesterday, August 27th — an annual, decentralized celebration of food produced on a human-scale. It is an opportunity for people around the world to gather in their gardens with friends, family, and members of their local community to celebrate the multiple pleasures and benefits of home-grown, hand-made foods.
