I’m not really a comic book fan, computer geek, nerd…not the typical person you would associate with such fantastic topics such as invisibility, magic, and walking through solid objects. I have always been interested in what science and technology could do to create “magic” for the common man. Imagine what the “natives” on Gilligan’s island thought when they first saw fire made from a wooden match. This would seem to be magic to them, such as man-made invisibility devices would be to most of us nowadays.
I will start by saying that I have little doubt that this technology will be discovered or developed within this century, if it is not already being put through practical tests in some dark corner in a small innocuous building on some remote military base, etc. I do however, unfortunately for the hopeful, find one fundamental flaw with a device that could render a living person invisible. I have read articles about refraction, the so-called bending of light around an object, that talk of producing some sort of invisibility or cloaking effect. Using refraction I would guess that this could be possible. Unfortunatley any other means would not work…hence the flaw I mentioned above. Imagine pulling on an “invisibility suit”. I hope you decided to wear your boxers that day, because when you flip the switch to activate your suit…wow, amazing, it works and becomes invisible. The bad part is that the wearer does not. Surprise….you just paid ACME Sci-Fi products a million dollars to give you a suit that will disappear to the human eye and leave you wandering around the city in your birthday suit, unbeknownst to you….at least until the police catch up with you. I am not a physicist. I don’t claim to be. Please correct me if I’m wrong about this. I would like to be able to become invisible as much as a lot of other people. I’m just worried that in my quest to become invisible I may make myself more visible to more people than ever before. It kinda reminds me of that dream where you go to school and only then realize you’ve forgotten to get dressed. Not the best way to start your day.
